Mock crash leaves a big impression

High school see the results of drunken wreck first-hand

In 2005, nearly 8,000 teenage drivers died after drinking and driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

In Oregon, more than 1,000 died in alcohol-related crashes, according to the Oregon Department of Human Services.

At Silverton High School, three seniors are trying to keep others from becoming another statistic.

On Thursday, SHS students filled the football stadium bleachers and watched a tragedy in motion — a simulated auto collision caused by a drunken driver.

Kennedy teacher accused of sex with students

Colby Molan faces two misdemeanor charges of misconduct, abuse

MOUNT ANGEL — The Mount Angel Police Department arrested a Kennedy High School teacher Tuesday after investigating accusations of misconduct.

Colby Molan, 35, of Keizer was arrested on charges of first-degree official misconduct and third-degree sex abuse for alleged sexual relationships with two students, Mount Angel police chief Brent Earhart said Tuesday afternoon.

City, BrucePac to delay changes in sewer rates

Rate adjustment would mean some pay more or less

BrucePac and the city of Silverton have reached an agreement to delay an increase in sewer rates for at least six months, according to city officials.

Don Kelley, the lawyer representing BrucePac, addressed the city council during its meeting May 5, urging the council to reconsider rate increases set for summer.

“Don’t tell anyone that I get lost,” Mahoney said as she looked for the latest code violation, this time a vacant lot overgrown with grass and blackberry bushes. “I am still finding my way around Silverton.”

D.A. denies some councilor requests

At issue is copy of grievance filed against councilor

MOUNT ANGEL — The Marion County District Attorney has denied the majority of requests city council member Michael Donohue made to the city.

Donohue requested a copy of a grievance filed by Megan Raymond, deputy city recorder, against him. He also asked for e-mail between interim city administrator Brent Earhart and union officials as well as statements of telephone conversations.

City budget holds line against costs

As Silverton grows, so does the demand for services, officials say

The 2008-09 city of Silverton budget will see a 2 percent increase from last year, bringing the total to nearly $30 million.

The city started the budget process last week, with the budget committee meeting to review the 181-page document and work toward a recommendation to city council. The council must adopt the budget by June 30, according to Oregon budget law. The new fiscal year for the city starts July 1.

Mount Angel rezone hearing set Monday

The Mount Angel City Council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday at the Mount Angel Fire District meeting Room at 300 Monroe St., to consider the Land Use Board of Appeal’s remand of a controversial rezoning application.

The council twice has denied a proposal by John Gooley, the Bob Fessler family and Kathryn Games to rezone 7.6 acres of light-industrial land to build homes.

More than 350 cleanups are scheduled Saturday throughout Oregon for SOLV’s 13th annual Down by the Riverside event.

Volunteers will spend the morning removing garbage, picking up litter in parks and along riverbanks and pulling invasive plants.

State competition puts band behind Riddle High

CORVALLIS — The John F. Kennedy High School concert band placed second at the Oregon School Activities Association’s state band competition last week.

Students representing 68 high schools performed May 6 through 9, at the 2008 OSAA / U.S. Bank / Les Schwab Tires Band and Orchestra State Championships held at the LaSells Stewart Center on the campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis.

The event, which was started in 1983, has grown from 50 runners during the first race.

The second annual Silverton Wine and Jazz Festival took over downtown Silverton on Saturday, turning coffee shops, banks and clothing stores into miniature jazz bars.

For the few that attended the second-year event, the combination of the smooth sounds and tasteful libations was a treat.
